I know what the loss of Coal means to you; I had a dog named "Jamie" who was my friend and when I had to give her up it was hard to take. Thanks for sharing.
My husband warned me not to read your column yesterday. I guessed the reason, "They had to put Coal to sleep, didn't they?" I did read it and I cried. After seeing Coal's picture, I can feel even more how much you loved him. He has the eyes of an angel. My dog, Maggie, has those eyes, too. I often say that if everyone in the world had Maggie's heart, there would be no killing and no wars (except maybe a squirrel every once in awhile). I know it was awful to have to make that decision (to put him to sleep). If I were unable to walk or even stand, I would want someone to put me to sleep.
I know that it gives y'all a lot of comfort to know how many people loved Coal through your columns. I enjoyed keeping him while you were gone. He was always gentile and docile and he always minded me. Unlike that goddamn Bork.
RIP, old man. You have earned it. Say hello to Sam for me. He was every bit as good as you.
What a beautiful dog. Having lost several pets I understand your heartache. I am a firm believer in "Doggy heaven" and know that you will meet up with Coal again one day.

So sorry to read about Coal. He obviously was much loved.
Nice looking dog. (And such a hot wife.)
Sorry to hear about Coal but that's the price we pay for their freindship.
Be well.

We understand how hard it is to let go a beloved animal, but you did the right thing. Our prayers are with you.
R.I.P. Coalie. I used to see you walking. You were a fine looking beast.

I enjoy your Sunday column very much.
